5 Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice that is used across Asia for centuries now. It is a spice that we consume daily and put in almost every dish. However, it not only adds flavour and aroma in dishes, but it also has numerous health benefits.
Our grandmothers used to treat us with turmeric for any kind of pain and swelling. In this blog, we are going to talk about 5 health benefits of the spice we all know so well. So, shall we begin?

5 Benefits of Turmeric:

Turmeric contains an ingredient called curcumin. The ingredient is an excellent antioxidant. It protects the cells from free radicals – components that damage the cells – and also slows down their ageing. This, in turn, helps you live longer and prevents many cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack.

Another benefit of turmeric is its anti-cancer properties. Scientists have found that the spice prevents the formation, development, and growth of cancerous cells at a molecular level.
In addition to it, it also prevents the spread of cancer. Furthermore, turmeric can even kill those cells too. And the benefits do not stop there. Turmeric and its component curcumin can also counteract some carcinogenic effect such as additives used in processed food.

While inflammation is a natural process and fights off injuries, viruses, and bacteria, having it long term can cause damage to the body. Long-term inflammation can cause heart diseases. That is where turmeric comes in.
Curcumin in turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that stop this and help us become healthy. It also works well on people with rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.

Good for Brain:

Turmeric is extremely beneficial for the brain. The curcumin in the spice crosses the blood-brain barrier. This, in turn, prevents Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to it, it also prevents protein plaque build-up in the brain as well.
Curcumin also prevents depression by increasing the levels of brain-derived neurotropic factors.

Helps in Skin Conditions:

Turmeric is an excellent spice for the skin as it reduces the symptoms of several skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

5 Spices that can uplift your Mental Health

Along with our physical health, the state of our mental health is as much important. However, it is often neglected. As per data, 45.7 million Indians had some sort of depressive disorders in 2017, while 44.9 million people suffer from anxiety. That is a huge number, especially when you consider the population of India.

Therefore, we at Ramagya Fresh wanted to help. As our motto is freshness and purity, that is what we strived for here as well. In this blog, we will now discuss about 5 spices that can uplift your mental health. All of these spices are readily available in the market, and you can buy them on your local grocery store. And of course, you can always order them from us. So, without spending any more time here, let us talk about these spices.

5 Spices that can uplift your Mental Health:

Here are 5 spices that can boost your mental health and save you from stress, anxiety, and depression. Read along to find out more.

I think it will be safe to say that every Indian household has cinnamon. Therefore, you probably do not even need to go outside to get the spice. The spice has a lively smell that helps lighten the mood and cheer you up. Furthermore, cinnamon is filled with a trace mineral, manganese. It neutralizes free radicals as well as regulating blood sugar. This, in turn, makes it a mood enhancer.

The spice can be used for adding flavour to the tea. In addition to that, you can also put it into cookies and cakes. Last but not the least, you can also consume it with applesauce.

The next spice that I am going to talk to you about that can make your mental health better is nutmeg. It is quite efficient in reducing depression. Apart from being anti-inflammatory, the spice is full of anti-anxiety or anti-anxiogenic properties, making it exceptional for your mental health.

Scientists have found in recent times that inflammation can be the root cause behind anxiety and depression. That makes nutmeg especially useful, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties.

To consume nutmeg, you can put it on puddings, sweet sauces, and even cakes.

This is the most expensive spice on the list. However, it does have mood enhancer abilities. In fact, even in the older days in Iran, which was then known as Persia, humans treated depression with saffron. Scientists have found positive results of using saffron on patients of depression.

While saffron can be taken with seafood, it also goes well with rice.

Another common spice that can make you feel better and beat anxiety and depression is turmeric. Even when used moderately in food, turmeric can give you mental clarity as well as uplifting your mood after 4-8 weeks. The reason behind this is an ingredient present in the spice, which is called curcumin. When taken with black pepper, the curcumin in the turmeric gets absorbed pretty quickly.

Scientists have found out turmeric is effective in dealing with both atypical depression and major depression.

Hot Pepper:

The final spice that I am going to talk to you about is hot pepper. While hot pepper itself does not have any anti-depressant properties, it contains a compound called Capsaicin. You can extract the ingredient from hot pepper and use it.

The human body produces endorphin –a hormone which reduces depression – when Capsaicin enters it. In addition to it, Capsaicin also fights with relapses in depression that occurs due to amphetamine withdrawal. There is not a single other treatment for this type of depression.

So, these are the spices that can uplift your mental health and keep you in a peaceful state of mind. Make full use of them and always remember, no matter what you are going through or what people say, you are worth it.

5 Myths about Spices

India is a subcontinent that is full of diversity, be it in terms of culture, religion, clothing and food. Therefore, it is pretty obvious for one to see the usage of many different spices in different dishes of a particular region. From Chole Bhature in the north to Idli Sambar in the south, from Machcher Jhol of the East to Khaman Dhokla of the west, each state uses its unique blend of spices to make them.

India is known as the ‘Land of Spices.’ Indian spices are exported all over the globe. Stats ay that during FY19, a total of 1.10 million tonnes of spices and spice products valued US$ 2.80 billion was exported from the country.

While spices are used to make the cuisines delicious all around the globe, there are a few misconceptions around them. You must have heard that spicy food can be unhealthy. Someone might even ask you the question:

“What if spices are harmful to your digestive system?”

Let’s look if those myths hold any truth or not.

Spicy Food is Oily:

This is one of the biggest myth people have about spices. Spices do not require too much oil; in fact, spices have their flavouring oil. This flavouring oil gets released while cooking and therefore you need even lesser oil to cook.

At Ramagya Fresh, we take care of retaining the flavouring oil of the spice when it goes through the grinding process, thereby making sure you need to less oil in cooking.

Spices are Unhealthy

Many people in the west have misconception over Indian spices and think that it’s unhealthy. That, however, is not true. Ayurveda has proven that most of the Indian spices have one or the other medicinal qualities in them. They, in fact, are beneficial for our health.

Another myth that goes around regarding spices is that they are spicy. It holds little truth, however. Other than chilli, there are not many spices that are spicy. They are more known for their flavour and aroma, which comes from the oil they have in them.

More Spices=More Tasty:

The common idea that a food item gets tastier when you add more spices to it is indeed false. While adding it in the proper quantity does increase the taste, more than that ruins it as well. Therefore, it is advised to add only the amount of spice that is needed and enjoy the flavour it brings.

Spices are not unhealthy until you retain their natural property and don’t add preservatives and artificial flavouring. Store them in a dry and air-tight container will help them stay in the purest form. To get them in the first place, do check out the full range of spices brought to you by Ramagya Fresh, from regular grounded spices to varieties of blended spices.
